Welcome to Kākano 2 for 2022!!!

I hope you all had a lovely holiday!

This blog will be your one-stop-shop for weekly notices and class information.  It will also be where I share what happens during the week in class with you all.

I am sure you are all a little anxious and a lot excited to start our school year.  I have been busy setting up our classroom and getting things sorted for the first day of school on Tuesday the 8th of February.

A little bit about me

My name is Sany-Joy Mareroa. I have been at St Mary's for 3 years now and look forward to my fourth year here with this Year 2 class as Kakano 2! I grew up in Rotorua with my parents and younger sister. I really enjoy the outdoors, traveling and exercising. I went to Dunedin to study teaching then worked in Auckland. I am so happy to be back here in Rotorua after 10 years and working at this amazing school!!

Reading information

  Kia Ora Kākano whānau,                                            It is likely you will see a big change in the reading books your child is receiving from this week. As you may be aware, St Marys is in the process of changing to a ‘structured literacy’ approach to reading. A consequence of this will be a change in the type and frequency of books being sent home. Each week the book will be targeting a specific reading/spelling rule that your child is learning to master. The books may appear too ‘easy’, however the focus is firmly on the particular rule being taught.  On Mondays your child will bring home an activity sheet with words from the story. (There may be other activities that come home, focussing on your child’s individual needs).  These words can be sounded out and practised, with the actual book coming home near the end of the week. Repetition is the key to embedding the rule until it becomes automatic, so this book can be read over and over again.  At this stage they will b

Term 2 Week 10

  Welcome to all our Kākano families and friends! We cannot believe how this term has flown and we are in our final week. Our tamariki are definitely going to need some down time in the holidays to relax. We hope you all have a fantastic break with your family. Principal’s Lunch Mr Macmillan will be having a Principal’s Lunch on Wednesday for some of our children who have been recognised for their hard work or participation in the classroom. The children attending the lunch will be coming home with an invitation. R.E. Books We hope you have enjoyed looking through your childs RE books and seeing what the children have been learning over the last couple of terms. Please can you fill in the whanau page and kindly return the book before the end of the week. Term 3 Week 5

  Week 5 Kia ora whānau, it’s lovely to see the sun out again. Let’s hope it stays that way for most of this week. Our kakano tamariki love being able to play outside and sorely missed that last week. Cross Country Weather permitting, this is happening on Friday the 26th August at 11:10am at school. Children need to wear their school uniform to school and bring either their PE gear OR shorts and t-shirt to change into. Children will also need to bring shoes to run in as we are running on the footpath as well as the field. If you are able to help, please let your child’s classroom teacher know as soon as possible. Mini Marathon A reminder that the form and payment need to be handed into the office by Tuesday 23rd August - that’s this coming Tuesday. Late entries will not be accepted.
